The back-end is the unsung and unseen hero of a website; it does all the behind-the-scenes heavy lifting while the user is engaged with the front-end. Websites created today are much more than simple web pages—they are web applications and software with databases. Server-side programming allows you to build dynamic sites and implement content management systems (CMS).
Back-end or server-side development is what originally got me fascinated with programming. I started by learning object-oriented programming languages like Java and C# in college. Then when I landed a job as a web programmer, I had to learn PHP and MySQL. Once I started building custom back-ends, my skills expanded to understanding how to manipulate WordPress themes and widgets. Even today, I have not stopped acquiring new back-end knowledge or processes. The key to developing an amazing back-end is innovation—taking my foundation and continually adding to it to meet my clients' goals.
